Islam was first introduced to Hong Kong in the middle of the 17th century. In 1605, the ships of British saw the arrival of Islam in Hong Kong. The arrival of the British East India Company brought along the first group of Muslims into Hong Kong. With the outbreak of the Opium war, the Hui population of the Guangdong province headed for Hong Kong, thus the Muslim society was further developed. 

Groups of Muslims were mainly distributed in regions of Tsim Sha Tsui of New Territory and Central District of Hong Kong. They kept habits and customs of Muslim and started to build mosques for the purpose of attending prayer service and other religious activities. The year of 1870 saw the construction of Shelly Street Mosque on Shelly Street, which is Hong Kong's first mosque. The other famous mosque in Hong Kong is the Kowloon Mosque which is the largest and Islamic center in Hong Kong.
